INTRODUCTION

Driving consistent user adoption in a linguistically diverse workforce.

TWi is a global provider of content consulting, information development, instructional design, and translation and localization services, working with some of the largest companies in the world. One of our core areas of expertise is user adoption. Within this domain, we have specific expertise in designing, developing, and localizing eLearning content in SEN Enable Now.

Our client’s mission is to deliver better nutrition to help people lead healthy, active lives. Based in Ireland, the company has built its reputation on innovation and investment, with enhanced performance as its ultimate goal. This philosophy has driven the business from being a dairy product specialist to its current portfolio of award-winning performance and lifestyle brands and nutrition solutions. Through strategic acquisitions and partnerships, our client has grown from simple farming roots to become a major player in the global food and wellness industry.

Optimum performance runs through every level of our client’s operations, spanning over 30 countries and with close to 8,000 employees. This is supported by SAP’s leading-edge technologies, which enable the company and its diverse workforce to perform consistently and collaboratively across borders and cultures.

A library of blended training content was created in SAP SuccessFactors using SAP Enable Now. TWi was approached to help design, produce, and localize the content for both go-live and learning in the flow of work enablement, which was then utilised in the eLearning communications campaign. The same learning content, coupled with contextual help and guided tours, was also published in SAP Companion, the component of SAP Enable Now that provides real-time continuous training and support to English and non-English speakers all over the globe.

THE CHALLENGE

To drive consistent user adoption in a linguistically diverse workforce.

As a people-centred organisation, it was important for our client to secure buy-in for the new HR system by ensuring that all employees had the same learning experience, regardless of mother tongue. They understood that to achieve successful user adoption on a global scale, they would have to start local, and ensure that all content was not only translated but also adapted to the norms, standards, and terminology of the local country.

Coupled with this challenge was the choice of translation tool. At the time, our client did not have licences for Translation Hub — SAP’s trained machine translation solution — so relied on TWi’s extensive localization expertise to help devise an alternative translation workflow. This workflow had to meet the following objectives:

  • Terminology: Incorporation of approved local market terms.
  • Translation: Use of translation memory to maximise re-use, minimise costs, and ensure timely completion.
  • Engineering: Adjustment of UI elements within SEN Enable Now to ensure correct positioning on screen.
  • In-context review: Linguistic review in SEN Enable Now to ensure all screen elements are displaying correctly in context.

THE ACTION

TWi implements custom translation workflow to produce market-specific eLearning content.

The workflow put in place by TWi comprised the following elements:

  • File preparation: We exported the content from SEN Enable Now to xlf files. This streamlined the translation process by enabling us to prepare the
xlf files for translation in SDL Studio.
  • Terminology: We created a list of key English terms and our linguists researched and proposed a suitable translation for each, thereby ensuring consistency of use across all content. our client’s native-speaking market experts signed off on all the terms.
  • Translation, editing, proofing: The files were translated in SDL Studio to facilitate incorporation of approved local market terms and consistency. This not only resulted in cost and time savings, but ensured content was translated in line with the ISO quality standard ISO 17100. Proofing was undertaken by our senior translators with the focus on meaning, style, and glossary adherence.
  • Import back into SEN Enable Now: Our localization engineers imported the translated files back into SEN Enable Now. The goal here is to spot and fix any obvious spacing and layout issues prior to in-context review.
  • In-context review: In this final and most important step, the translators checked each screen of the localized course to ensure all content displayed correctly in context. They then produced a report listing all fixes for implementation in SEN Enable Now by our localization engineers. In conclusion, they completed a final regression review to ensure all changes had been carried out successfully.

THE IMPACT

Accelerated user adoption thanks to a consistent learning experience across all languages.

TWi’s long history of working with SEN Enable Now brought valuable expertise to our client’s eLearning communications campaign. The introduction of a custom localization workflow provided the flexibility that was needed to ensure a seamless learning experience for all employees, both English speakers and speakers of other languages.

TWi’s cross-functional team played a key role in accelerating user adoption of the new eLearning content among our client’s 6,000 employees worldwide. our client experienced first-hand how professional localization can support effective change management, particularly on global projects where local buy-in is very important.

The project workflow was custom designed and implemented so that both partners were closely involved throughout the entire process, and were able to contribute their own particular strengths to each step. This helped to streamline the workflow, deliver cost and time savings, and achieve the highest professional standards.
